On the morning of today (September 12), the Information Office of Shanghai Municipality held a press briefing. Deng Jianping, deputy director of the Organizing Committee of the Shanghai International Light Festival and director of the Shanghai Landscaping and City Appearance Administrative Bureau, introduced the details of the first Shanghai International Light Festival. Liu Min, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, Cheng Meihong, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, Miao Jun, second-level inspector of the Shanghai Landscaping and City Appearance Administrative Bureau, Long Wanli, deputy chief of Jing’an District, Deng Dawei, deputy chief of Xuhui District, and Wang Jian’er, vice president of Shanghai Media Group, attended the press briefing and answered questions from reporters.The Shanghai International Light Festival is a public welfare event focused on urban light arts, approved by the Shanghai Municipal Government. It serves as a major platform for showcasing Shanghai’s urban renewal achievements, unique characteristics, and fashion culture. Adhering to the principles of “internationalization, specialization, popularization, and industrialization,” the festival features a model of “one main venue with multiple sites, rotating through urban areas, and linking with industrial sectors.” The festival will open on September 19 and close on October 18. With over 100 themed activities, it aims to create a new window to showcase the city’s image and establish a new IP for night tourism.First, the events at the main venue are spectacular. From September 19 to 27, the Shanghai Exhibition Center will host eight themed events, including the opening ceremony, an architectural projection show, a light arts installation exhibition, an expert seminar, a global landscape lighting industry exhibition, a Shanghai landscape lighting development achievement exhibition, the release of the city’s light map, and the “Light of Fashion” event. The architectural projection show will highlight “red culture, Shanghai culture, and Jiangnan culture” with both an immersive dome experience in the central hall and a neoclassical outdoor architectural projection. The installation exhibition features design works from world-renowned light artists, combining both aesthetic appeal and interactive elements. The expert seminar, supported by CIE (International Commission on Illumination), LUCI (Lighting Urban Community International), and China Illuminating Engineering Society, will include 64 internationally acclaimed light artists from 12 countries or regions. The industry exhibition will showcase 19 works from leading domestic and international brands, representing cutting-edge technologies, processes, and products. Finally, the achievement exhibition will illustrate Shanghai’s urban development through 18 multimedia thematic scenes.Second, each sub-venue has its own unique characteristics. Following the principle of “one district, one theme, one district, one characteristic,” the festival will feature 129 themed activities across 12 sub-venues. Highlights include nearly 200 light shows and cultural activities:-In Pudong New Area: A massive naked-eye 3D architectural projection show on the Silos.- In Huangpu District: “The City of Light Chasers,” an immersive digital light interactive drama.- In Jing’an District: The “Traveling in Light - Sanxingdui Fantasy Carnival” series of events.- In Xuhui District: “Jiangnan’s Myriad Scenes - Chinese Landscape” projection show at TANK Shanghai on the West Bund.- In Changning District: The Columbia Circle light adventure show.- In Putuo District: The Suzhou Creek light and boat activity.- In Hongkou District: The INLET architectural projection show.- In Yangpu District: The “Show Time — Belt of Times” series of activities.- In Songjiang District: The Shanghai Film Park Huanghe Road lighting event.- In Qingpu District: The “Time Overflowing: Mist and Water Boat” light show.- In Fengxian District: The “Fantasy Forest” architectural projection show.- In Lin-gang Special Area: The “Lin-gang Moment” lake view light display.Third, the panoramic light map boasts a range of features. This map, highlighting over 100 night-view photo spots and recommended routes, will be made available at both the main and branch venues of the light festival, as well as at airports, railway stations, and other key locations, offering free access to domestic and international tourists. The “Shanghai International Light Festival Weixin Mini-Program” will also be launched, enabling visitors to book tickets, find information on key events and photo spots, and take a virtual tour of the classic “Night Shanghai” City Walk routes. A campaign to select night-view travel experts in Shanghai will be introduced. Tourists can use the festival’s WeChat Mini-Program to check in at designated night-view landmarks at the main and branch venues. Frequent check-ins may qualify participants as night-view travel experts, granting them a night tour experience package and an invitation to the festival’s closing ceremony. Additionally, the light map will be featured on Xiaohongshu, showcasing night-view photo spots and allowing visitors to explore expert travel notes.Fourth, multiple industries are coming together, allowing diverse activities to flourish. Themed events such as the Shanghai Summer International Consumption Season, the 35th Shanghai Tourism Festival, the World Design City Conference, Shanghai Fashion Week, the exhibition on ancient Egyptian civilization, and the International Electronic Music Festival will be connected to enhance the overall experience. In the culture and tourism sector, attractions like the Oriental Pearl Tower, Huangpu River Cruise, Shanghai Port International Passenger Center, and platforms like Ctrip will offer tickets to the main venue and light show maps, catering to both domestic and international tourists. In the business sector, key business districts such as West Nanjing Road, East Nanjing Road, Middle Huaihai Road, and Lujiazui will feature light art installations, small-scale light shows, and a “ticket-coupon linkage” system, offering seamless access to light festival activities and special promotions for visitors in the business districts.Fifth, services and support will lead to both conveniency and efficiency. Admission to the main venue activities follows a real-name reservation system with “free but ticketed” entry. Domestic and international tourists can make reservations via platforms such as Damai.cn, the festival’s Mini-Program, and Xiaohongshu. The venue offers a range of convenient services, including information desks, emergency medical stations, and volunteers. For international visitors, English-version light maps and bilingual Chinese-English service guidance will be provided to ensure a seamless experience.
