14 spokespersons of the CPC Shanghai Committee made their debut at a news conference yesterday.

The Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China announced the appointment of its first spokesman yesterday.

He is Qiu Xin, deputy director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Committee.

Qiu was editor-in-chief of the Jiefang Daily newspaper before he took up his Publicity Department post in February.

Also yesterday, 13 other spokespersons for nine departments of the CPC Shanghai Committee made their debut.

At a news conference, they promised that they would be sharing more information and be having more communication with the public.

Feng Wei, one of the spokespersons appointed yesterday, told the news conference that Shanghai had more than 1.75 million Party members at the end of last year - 7.61 percent of the city's population.

And he said that people under the age of 35 accounted for nearly a quarter of Party members.

The Shanghai government introduced its spokesperson system in 2003 to hold routine press conferences and deal with media questions.

Its current spokesman is Chen Qiwei, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Information Office.
