I Brief background information about the Shanghai Science Festive
Initiated in 1991, Shanghai Science Festival is an event organized by the government, the first of its kind in China and the second in the world, with an aim to spread scientific knowledge, promote scientific spirit, boost scientific thinking and approach, improve science-related quality of the general public, as well as to create a science and innovation-friendly social environment. To further raise its influence and brand awareness, Shanghai Science Festival completed an overall upgrading in 2016, transforming from a biannual event to an annual festival that runs simultaneously with the National Science and Technology Week. Moreover, an organizing committee for the festival has also been established with members from 32 government departments of various administrative levels. The organizing committee’s office is set at Shanghai Science and Technology Commission. Under the leadership of Shanghai municipality and the municipal committee of the Communist Party, Shanghai Science Festival, following years of development, has evolved into a significant platform where the latest achievements of the city’s effort to build itself into a science and innovation center, as well as the progress in promoting popular science, are demonstrated, and a key activity for the city’s “Four Brands” campaign.
This May marks the 5th anniversary of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s strategic call for Shanghai to accelerate its pace in building the city into a science and innovation center with global influence. To better demonstrate the city’s achievements in this area and to further raise the “passion” for science and innovation among the general public, the municipal government has decided to hold a series of major science and technology-related events in May and create therefore a “science and innovation”month. Among all, Shanghai Science Festival is a key event for the month as it connects the Shanghai Science and Technology Award and the Pujiang Innovation Forum which will be held before and after the festival.
II The theme design and basic ideas of the 2019 Shanghai Science Festival
The 2019 Shanghai Science Festival will be held from May 15th to May 26th for a period of 12 days with the theme of “Popularity Innovation – Entering the Globally Influential Technology Innovation Center”. Compared with previous years, this year's Science Festival has highlighted three "keywords":
The first is linkage. For the first time, it will be held in conjunction with the major scientific and technological activities such as the Pujiang Innovation Forum and the Shanghai Science and Technology Awards Conference. The launching ceremony of the Science Festival will be held in the same place as the Science and Technology Awards Conference at the same time. The closing ceremony will be held concurrently with the Pujiang Innovation Forum and is the carrier for the closure of the National Science and Technology Week.
The second is diversity. This year's Science Festival uses diversified activities and platforms to attract diversified groups to participate, pays more attention to interaction and deep participation, and aims to present a grand and colorful technology “carnival” to the public. During the period, the city will hold more than 1,000 activities, including scientific lectures, exhibitions, film and television works, and public exchanges. Each has its own characteristics and rich content.
The third is internationalization. This year's Science Festival will not only introduce globally high-end science and technology resources but also promote renowned science and technology activities and resources of Shanghai to spread to the outside world, creating an international innovation festival that can fully demonstrate the charm of Shanghai. Among them, a series of activities such as the International Salon of Science Festival, the International Science and Technology Art Exhibition, the International Science and Technology Micro Film Competition, and Entering the World Top 500, will be held.
III Activities in different sections of the 2019 Shanghai Science Festival
The 2019 Shanghai Science Festival has set up ten sections including a number of key activities. Among them, in the opening section, the launching ceremony of the Science Festival and the “Science Red Carpet Show” will be held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. The "Science Red Carpet Show" aims to promote the scientific spirit, create a social atmosphere that loves science, respects science, advocates innovation, and actively participates in innovation, and stimulates the enthusiasm of science and technology innovation in the whole society. This year's guests fort the red carpet show include: 2018 National Science and Technology Award winners, Shanghai Science and Technology Award winners, high-level foreign experts who work in Shanghai, leading talents with outstanding achievements in science and technology innovation in building Shanghai into Science and Technology Center, and winners of the show "Youth Edison", a TV show about scientific dreams made by STV.
In the section of people-related activities, more science education centers and science and technology innovation centers will be open to the public. Among them, 300-plus science education centers will be free of charge or with a preferential price; 100-plus science and technology innovation centers including key labs and the engineering technology research center will invite ordinary people and let them feel the charm of science and technology in person, shortening the distance in between. For example, people can watch on-site demonstration of superconductor maglev and superconductor energy storage in the key lab of ultra-high temperature, and attend “magic superconductor” lecture; in the key lab of new drug development, people can study space cognitive ability of lab mice, explore the micro world that human eyes can’t see, and decode secrets of life.
In the section of forum-related activities, we will organize a series of dialogue-style forums on different topics. For example, we will invite technology festival organizers from both home and abroad to have roundtable discussions on the communication and collaboration of technology-related activities during the “international salon of technology festival” and mastermind the future development in this regard. “Mozi Salon” will invite experts to talk about hot topics like moon exploration, quantum and science fiction to brainstorm with people on the second home of human beings.
In the section of competition-related activities, we will the present a batch of exciting events. We will launch the “international science education micro-movie competition” and give the awards during the Shanghai International Film Festival. With such movies, we expect to show the latest technological discoveries and achievements to the public and exhibit quality movie products. In places like the Shanghai Science and Technology Movie Center and the Shanghai Film Museum, we will broadcast the newly-shot HD science education documentaries as well as renovated classics of science education documentaries; we will also show them on the movie channel of the Oriental TV. We will host the Shanghai Science Education Guide Competition and the Science Experiment Exhibition, and give awards to serve as a platform to show Shanghai’s development of quality science education products in recent years. We will also host some competitions like “Science Star of Tomorrow” and exhibitions to enrich the innovative environment in Shanghai.
In the section of art-related activities, we will host a “magic of light and shadow” show to bring a memorable experience for visitors through modern visible technologies, novel exhibits, interactive entertainment and educational events presented by the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum.
In the audio-visual section, a large-scale TV talk show on science pioneers named as "Zhi Niu Er Zhe (which means the leading ones)" will be launched. The launching ceremony of the talk show and the exhibition will be held in the Shanghai Center to demonstrate the scientific research processes and the fighting spirits of the leading figures in science and technology. After that, the "Pioneers of Science and Innovation" exhibition will be on display at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, so that the public can get close to the achievements of science and technology innovation, and deeply feel the spirit of science.
