Press Release for April 11, 2019 Media Briefing by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government

The Information Office of Shanghai Municipality held a press conference on April 11.

Deputy secretary general of Communist Party of China Shanghai Committee and director of Shanghai Commerce Commission Shang Yuying introduced the preparation work for the 7th China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair.

Vice director of Shanghai Commerce Commission Yang Chao, chief engineer of Shanghai Science Commission Lu Min, chief financial officer of Donghao Lansheng(Group)Co.,Ltd Liu Hongjie, authorized representative of the Saarland state government in Germany Ammar Alkassar and British Consul General in Shanghai John Edwards attended the press conference and took questions from the press.

China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair is approved by the State Council, co-hosted by Ministry of Commerce,Ministry of Science and Technology, State Intellectual Property Office and Shanghai Municipal Government. It's the only national-level professional fair specially for international technology trade and the annual event has been held regularly for the past six years.

This year's fair will be held from April 18 to April 20 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center.

After six years of practical exploration, the Shanghai International Trade Fair has become an important platform of display for international leading technologies and an important platform for links to be established between innovation resources and stakeholders, as well as an important channel and platform for technical exchanges and cooperation between small and medium-sized innovative enterprises.

According to the statistics of the Ministry of Commerce's technology import and export information management system, in 2012-2018, the contract value of the city's technology import and export deals increased picked up from about US$4.9 billion in 2012 to US$14 billion in 2018, a surge of 184.7 percent. Last year, the contract value of technology import and export deals in Shanghai topped other domestic cities.

I Basic information

The theme of this year's Shanghai International Trade Fair is “Converging Global Innovation and Wisdom, Sharing the Technology Trade in a new Chapter.”

This year the total exhibition area is 35,000 square meters. The exhibition will have five major functions namely “Technology Exhibition,” “Project Matchmaking,” “Forum Activity,” “Transaction Service” and “Official Release.”

Five specific exhibition areas featuring the guests of honors, technological innovation, professional technology, innovation ecosystem and trading services will also be set up accordingly.

Relevant activities will also be held in accordance with the core development concept of "Smart and Startup companies) of the Shanghai International Trade Fair.

The fair will host nearly 1,000 exhibitors and the number of visitors is estimated to reach 52,000.

First, exhibition areas designated for honorary guest city (state). This year’s CSITF has invited Fujian Province to be the domestic guest of the fair and Germany’s Saarland state and the UK’s Liverpool city to be the overseas guests of honor. Activities including trade negotiations and project docking particularly on artificial intelligence and life sciences will be held.

Second, exhibition areas designated for technological innovation. Industry leading, authoratative and innovative technological achievements as well as scientific research projects from both home and abroad, such as the biopharmaceutical technology of Hangzhou Zhengda Medical Co and Softtek’s latest IT products and solutions, will be displayed in the area. 

Third, exhibition areas designated for specialized technology. The latest achievements in intelligent manufacturing, energy saving and environmental protection, biopharmaceutical and new generation of IT solutions, such as Ezisurg Medical Co’s minimally invasive procedures for tumor disease and SLAM TEC’s SLAM Cube, will be showcased.

Fourth, exhibition areas designated for innovative ecosystems. Under a theme of “Innovation Without Borders,” this year’s CSITF will hold a science and technology festival for makers and offer visitors from both home and abroad innovative experiences such as M3 Lab and AI interaction.

Fifth, exhibition areas designated for trade services. One-stop services featuring intellectual property, technology transfer, fintech and human resources will be provided for both sellers and buyers as a demonstration of support mechanism covering the whole industry chain.  

Sixth, forums and coventions. As usual, a “1+3+X” model for forum and activity will continue to be adopted at this year’s CSITF, which stands for one opening forum, three theme-day activities and more than 60 professional forums.

Professor Nadia Magnenat Thalmann, director of the Institute for Media Innovation at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, among others, will be invited to deliver a keynote speech at the opening forum. Moreover, the Shanghai municipal government will sign an MOU on economic and trade cooperation with Germany’s Saarland state; United Nations Industrial Development Organization will release its newest research on international standards for industrial park ecology; and this year’s event will continue to partner with the “Forum” program produced by Guizhou satellite TV and invite Long Yongtu, the country’s former vice trade minister and China’s chief WTO negotiator, to be its guest host.

Theme day activities last for three days. The theme day of the guest city will host events such as meetings of high-ranking officials, the launching ceremony of theme pavilions, agreement signing, guest city forum and project match-making; the theme day of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization will host forums and project road shows with focuses on “technology, investment and innovation;” the theme day of intellectual property protection will host brand and economic forums on the promotion of intellectual property protection and briefings on Shanghai’s protection of intellectual property.

Featured forums will host all kinds of forums and meetings to convey innovative thoughts with focuses on share and communication of global technological wisdom, quality and services in the ecosystem of technology trading, and development and facilitation of technologies.

II Main Characteristics

The 7th China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair will feature characteristics in five aspects:

The first is to better serve the national strategy. This year’s fair will expand its influence both at home and abroad, and improve services across the whole industry chain, targeting the construction of “Belt and Road”, the construction of Shanghai into an innovation center of science and technology, and the integrated development of Yangtze River Delta Region. Based on the Guide for Integrated Development of Yangtze River Delta Region, the fair will host targeted conferences to allocate innovation resources in the region for introduction of new technology, new ideas, new innovation and new management models; it will host the theme day for intellectual property protection, and establish a coordinated system to promote joint intellectual property protection in the region; it will improve the construction of information services platform for technology trading, providing the latest information and showcasing the achievements for the construction of “Belt and Road” and integrated development in the Yangtze River Delta Region as well as coordination and resources sharing with the China International Import Expo.

The second is to expand the exhibition of leading International technologies. The exhibition area of overseas exhibitors will reach 2,600 square meters, of whom come from countries including the United States, Canada, Hungary, Germany, South Korea and nearly 100 corporates and research organizations, which is up 30 percent year on year. Among them, Morgan Star from Hungary has taken part in the fair for four consecutive years to showcase its application in medical technology, while companies from Germany will exhibit technologies in anti-bacterial technology for textiles and companies from South Korea will showcase technologies for renewable energy.

Thirdly, the trade fair will concentrate on the achievements of professional innovation resources. A group of "unicorns" and companies which are industry “invisible champions” will be gathered in the artificial intelligence service robot area. For example, Yitu Technology will show the artificial intelligence technology that has won the world’s top prize for four times. Royole Technology will showcase the world's first foldable flexible mobile phone for consumers;  Shanghai Aican Industrial Company will present what future restaurants served by robots will look like;  Other outstanding enterprises in artificial intelligence fields such as Deep Blue Technology, Slamtec, Ecovacs and Xiao-i  will also participate in the exhibition.

Fourthly, the fair will make efforts to expand channels for technological trade exchanges. Of the 27 provinces and cities participating in the exhibition, 81 percent will display their latest achievements in fields like Big Data, integrated circuits, intelligent manufacturing in brand-new special images. A special area for the Yangtze River Delta Federation of Industry and Commerce will be established, which will focus on technological innovations and distinguished products made by private enterprises in the area.

Lastly, we will build an all-round service system. Relying on the “ 3+365 Alliance,” the trade fair will provide technology demanders and suppliers both comprehensive online and offline services, including talent service and technology achievement inquiry. And  technology transfer zone will offer multi-dimensional docking services covering the whole industry chain for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. At the same time, several docking activities will be held for small and medium-sized innovative firms.

Highlights

Highlight projects: the latest model Maybach 2019 and self-learning intelligent robot will be launched by Saarland, Germany; Liverpool will showcase its “virtual engineering center” and material innovation factory; Unmanned system of Beijing; Shenzhen and Hubei Province will present pure graphene intelligent heating clothing and intelligent industrial cloud platform respectively.

Highlight exhibition groups: For the first time, the United States and Canada will form a North American exhibition group, focusing on advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, intelligent healthcare, Big Data, financial technology and human-computer interaction. The university exhibition team will have four more new participants including Wenzhou University, Southeast University, Nanjing University and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and they will join with 18 science and technology universities in Shanghai to carry out technology alliance within the Yangtze River Delta area.

Highlight activities: the fair will hold up to 60 special events including the Saarland, Germany Artificial Intelligence Forum, the Liverpool Trade and Investment Negotiation and Docking Meeting, the Second Artificial Intelligence-China International Service Robot Innovation and Development Conference, the China (Shanghai) Brand Economic Forum, the Maker Science and Technology Festival, the launch ceremony of the CSITF, and the award ceremony for popular projects on this fair.
